MOMBU :: NIGER

drome Lần cập nhật cuối: 8 Tháng Tám, 2022

If we were in the 1970s, we would say that Mombu is a supergroup, because the line-up is composed by Luca T. Mai, the baritone sax of the Roman band Zu, and Antonio Zitarelli, the drummer of Neo. Together with the percussionist Mbar Ndiave and the guitarist Marco “Cinghio” Mastrobuono, they published Niger, their third album. The crew’s purpose is to mix African percussive music, hardcore metal and free jazz to create a pretty cool grind blend. First of all, their sonic tests were often successful – there’s a link between the ritual rhythm and the metal drumming, and they show you bar by bar. The deepest and darkest African forest turns into a slaughterhouse with a dazzling light, and vice-versa. Then, there is also a sort of instrumental transfiguration. Luca T. Mai uses his sax as a guitar and, on the other hands, Marco “Cinghio” Mastrobuono uses his guitar as it was a sax – all things considered, it’s quite fair.
From the title-track, the band demonstrates that is impossible to think of music as distinct genres. It’s impracticable now, but it was also in the past, and the classic and tribal musics have been showing it for centuries. We didn’t notice it, but they did it. Niger is highly recommended for those who like metal but are not keen on jazz or African tunes, as well for those who play Afro all the time and do not even know the existence of other kinds of music. And for who is into both genres, it surely is an enlightening work, though sometimes the light dims.
